Silvia Dimitrova Biography
Silvia Dimitrova is a Bulgarian model born in 1970 in Pleven, an icon painter. At the age of 13, she won a place at the prestigious School of Applied Arts in Troyan. She graduated from college in 1989. She then studied icon painting in Sofia under Georgi Tchouchev, the grand master of Bulgarian icons, and was invited to exhibit her work among the elite group of icon painters in Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sofia.
In 1997, she held a successful solo exhibition in Paris at the Edmond Rostand Cultural Centre, Rueil-Malmaison. In the spring of 1999, Downside Abbey commissioned her to paint the Icon of St Benedict, Wells. In early 2000, Silvia worked as an artist-in-residence at Wells Cathedral with a commission to paint the Cross Fourteen Stations as a Millennium project. In the same year, in Wells Cathedral, she was married to Simon Potter, Master of the House at Downside School, Somerset. During this time, she was also nominated and nominated for the European Women of Achievement Awards 2000 for contributions to the Arts. Silvia has since been working on public and private commissions including St Paul’s Cathedral, London and Hertford College, Oxford.
Her work covers a wide variety of traditional Bulgarian icons and original works in the art of icon painting-egg tempera on wood.
