Biography:
Robert Nivelle, in full Robert Georges Nivelle (born October 15, 1856, Tulle, France— died March 23, 1924, Paris), commander-in-chief of the French armies on the Western Front for five months in World War I. His career was ruined by the failure of his offensive in the spring of 1917. Nivelle graduated from the École Polytechnique in 1878, served as an officer-off officer in Indochina, Algeria and China He rose to command a division in 1915 and then the III Corps, which helped put a stop to the German offensive in the Battle of Verdun early 1916. He succeeded General Philippe Pétain as second army commander at Verdun in May 1916. The use of creeping artillery barrages in two stunningly effective French counterattacks there (October, December 1916) allowed the French to regain almost all of the ground that the Germans had gained over the previous six months.
