Early Life
Ringo Starr was born to Richard Starkey on July 7, 1940, in Liverpool , England. He was the only child, and while his mother stared at him, his father lost interest in family life at an early age. His parents split up when Starkey was only four, and after that he never saw much of his father. His mother worked as a cleaning woman and then as a barmaid to support them.
At the age of six, Starkey had an appendectomy and then peritonitis, causing him to remain in a hospital for 12 months while recovering. This put him far behind in school, but just as he caught (with a tutor 's help), he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and spent the next two years in a sanatorium.
One way the staff were trying to distract and occupy their patients was to make a band and young Starkey found percussion here, using a wooden briefcase to hit the cabinets next to his bed. From then on, despite his musical talent for other instruments, he was a drummer.
