He was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on October 17, 1962. In 2006, he directed Idiocracy, a science fiction comedy starring Luke Wilson. He made a short film that was bought by Comedy Central, which started his successful career. He won the Primetime Emmy Award and two Annie Awards for King of the Hill and two Critics' Choice Television Awards for his Silicon Valley series.
