Kim Chiu is the fourth of five children to be born to William Chiu, a Chinese businessman from Mindoro and Louella (born Yap; 1963–2013), a Filipino Sangley native who migrated from the Dinagat Islands to Surigao del Sur, Philippines. She's fluent in Cebuano (Visayan), Tagalog, English, Waray, Hokkien and Mandarin Chinese beginners only. Since her parent's separation in 1998, Kim has had a bad relationship with both of her parents. She and her siblings were raised by their paternal grandma and, as children, often moved to the Philippine Visayas; moved to Tacloban, Leyte, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos City, Mindoro and back to Cebu City until 2006. In 2013, she reunited with her father “after five years of alienation” while visiting her second partner and half-sisters in San Jose, Mindoro Occidental. Her biological mother, Louella, went into a coma a month later in June. After a week of hospital treatment, Louella died of brain aneurysm on June 23, 2013. In her mother's eulogy, she debunked the rumors of animosity about her mother's child abandonment and said, “An angel guides me in my decisions in life. For me, that's finally my mom.” Chiu dated co-star Gerald Anderson from 2006 to 2010.
