After graduating from Osaka University of Arts in Visual Design Planning Department, he decided to enter the video game industry, and joined Nintendo in April 1986. Tanabe was initially part of the group Entertainment Analysis & Development. He has directed the video games Yume Kōjō, Doki Doki Panic & Super Mario Bros. 2. In 2003, Tanabe moved to the Division of Technology Planning and Development, where he became Production Group Director No. 3. He has been a developer in recent years, overseeing the development of first-party Nintendo video games, such as the Metroid Prime first-person adventure.
