Mayer continued to play local clubs after their split, improving his talents and attracting followers. After his performance at Southwest Festival in 2001, he was signed to Aware Records, then Columbia Records, which released his first EP, Inside Wants Out. His next two full-length albums— Room for Squares (2001) and Heavier Things (2003)—went wellcommercially, reaching multi-platinum status.
