Taylor was born to Dr Isaac M. Taylor(father) and Gertrude Woodward(mother) in a well-to – do household. His father was a resident doctor from a well-off Southern Scottish origin family, while his mother was an aspiring opera singer.
He and his siblings grew up together: three brothers, Alex, Livingston and Hugh, and one sister, Kate. He and his siblings became very interested in music, belonging to a family with a music background, so that all his siblings became musicians and released their own albums.
When James was 3, he moved with his family to Chapel Hill, North Carolina when his father was named dean of the University of North Carolina Medical School. Since he learned the guitar in 1960, he started taking cello lessons. He also wrote his first guitar song at age 14.

He did, however, earn a high school diploma from the affiliated Arlington School of the hospital in 1966. He moved to New York to form a band after checking up and urging Kortchmar.
