Don Rickles is best known as a comedian. A legendary insult comic who was a regular guest at The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson and a staple on The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast Specials. Mr. Potato Head also spoke in the three Toy Story movies. He was born on May 8, 1926, in Queens , NY. He was the inspiration and hero of the comic Garry Shandling. He was serving in the U.S. Navy graduated from high school to fight in the Second World War. Later, he studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and began performing stand-up comedy at hotels in the Catskill Mountains in New York City after becoming frustrated with the lack of work he was getting as an actor. He became famous for the first time after having fun with Frank Sinatra while working at a nightclub in Miami Beach. Sinatra, taken by a young comedian, encouraged other celebrities to see his act and to be humiliated by him.

  • After graduating from Newtown High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a first-class seaman on the USS Cyrene (AGP-13) engine torpedo boat tender during World War II. In 1946, he was honorably discharged. Two years later, intending to be a dramatic actor, he studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and played little parts on television.
