Biography
Adolphus Jean Sweet was an American Comedian, credited with nearly 60 Television & Film appearances, as well as many appearances in Stage productions until he died of stomach cancer in 1985. Sweet was born on July 18, 1920 in New York City, New York. His father was an auto mechanic and his first ambition was to play Soccer. In 1939, he attended the University of Alabama, however, he was called away from school for a World War II service tour with the US Army Air Force, serving as a navigator on the B-24 Liberator bomber aircraft. During his service, he was shot down in Romania while flying in Operation Tidal Wave and then spent two years as a POW. After the battle, he played semi-pro Soccer and Boxed while working on a master’s degree from Columbia University. He went on to head up the Department of Drama at Barnard College. Shortly thereafter, he made his Broadway debut in Rhinoceros, starring Zero Mostel. His first major role in film was in The Young Doctors in 1961. He has also made numerous appearances in films such as You’re a Big Boy Now (1966), A Lovely Way to Die (1968), The Swimmer (1968) and Finian’s Rainbow (1968) as Sheriff, and on television in the 1960s and 1970s, including roles in The Defenders, The Edge of Night, Another World as Police Chief Gil McGowan, and Dark Shadows.
