Cynthia Ann Crawford was born in DeKalb, Illinois, on February 20, 1966, daughter of Dan Crawford and Jennifer Sue Crawford-Moluf (born Walker). She has two sisters, Chris and Danielle, and a brother, Jeffery, who died of childhood leukaemia at age 3. She said that her family has been in the United States for decades and that her heritage is mainly German, English and French. By featuring in an episode on Who Do You Think You Are? In 2013, she learned that her ancestors included English nobles and continental royal families of the Middle Ages, and that she had come from Charlemagne. In her sophomore year at high school, she got a call from a local clothing store for modelling work, only to discover that it was a practical joke set up by two of her classmates. However, the following year, a number of high school students, including Crawford, were recruited by another store to work for them (including a model shoot). In her junior year, local photographer Roger Legel, whose work included photographing a different college girl in the DeKalb Nite Weekly, asked her to take a picture of her for publication; the result was Crawford's first cover. The photo and positive reviews she got was enough to persuade her to start modelling. At 17, she joined the Elite Model Management 's Look of the Year contest and was a runner-up. Elite Model Management began to represent her in Chicago. In 1984, Crawford graduated from DeKalb High School as a valedictorian. She earned an academic scholarship to study chemical engineering at Northwestern University, which she attended for just one quarter. She dropped out to pursue a full-time modelling career. After working for photographer Victor Skrebneski in Chicago, Crawford moved to New York City in 1986 and signed with the modelling agency Elite New York.
