Jared Leto Biography

Jared Joseph Leto is an American actor, songwriter, and singer. He was born on 26th December 1971. Leto got recognition for his role as Jordan Catalano on the television series My So-Called Life (1994), after beginning his career with television appearances in the early 1990s. He made his film debut in How to Make an American Quilt (1995), and earned critical acclaim for his Prefontaine (1997) success. Leto played supporting roles in The Thin Red Line (1998), Fight Club (1999), and American Psycho (2000), as well as leading roles in Urban Legend (1998), and received critical acclaim after playing the heroin addict Harry Goldfarb in Requiem for a Dream (2000). He later became more focused on his music career, returning to performing with Panic Room (2002), Alexander (2004), Lord of War (2005), Lonely Hearts (2006), Chapter 27 (2007), and Mr. Nobody (2009). He directed Artifact, a documentary film, in 2012. He subsequently appeared in Suicide Squad (2016) and Blade Runner (2017).

Leto's performance as a transgender woman at the Dallas Buyers Club (2013) won him the Academy Award, the Golden Globe Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actor. Leto is considered a process performer, known for his relentless commitment to his roles and for his studies. Sometimes he remains fully in character for the length of his films' shooting schedules, even to the point that his health is adversely affected. He's often known for being selective with his movie roles.

Leto is a leading vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and the main songwriter for Thirty Seconds to Mars, a band he founded in Los Angeles, California in 1998 with his older brother, Shannon Leto. Their debut album, 30 Seconds to Mars (2002), was released with favorable reviews, but only for small commercial success. The band gained worldwide fame with the release of their second album, A Beautiful Lie (2005). The subsequent releases, This Is War (2009) and Passion, Desire, Faith, and Dreams (2013), received more critical and commercial success. As of September 2014, the band sold more than 15 million albums worldwide. Leto also directed music videos, including the MTV Video Music Award for 'The Kill' (2006), 'Kings and Queens' (2009) and 'Up in the Air' (2013).

Jared Leto Achievement

He played the assassin of John Lennon, Mark David Chapman, in the movie Chapter 27.

Jared Leto Early Life

Leto's mother has Cajun ancestry. “Leto” is the nickname of his stepfather. His parents separated when he was a child, and he and his older brother, Shannon Leto, lived with their mother and their maternal grandparents, Ruby (Russell) and William Lee Metrejon. His father remarried and committed suicide when Jared was eight. Leto and his family moved often from Louisiana to different cities around the country. “My mom's dad was in the Air Force,” Leto said, “so moving around a lot was a natural way of life.” Leto had two younger half-brothers from his dad's second marriage.

Constance joined the hippie movement and inspired her sons to become involved in the arts. Leto said he “was raised around a lot of artists, musicians, photographers, painters and people who were at the theatre,” adding, “Just getting an art hippie experience as a kid, there wasn't a straight line that was drawn. We encouraged artistic experience and creative expression. We didn't try to cut it down and stunt any of that kind of development.” Leto started playing music with his brother.

Early acting roles 1992–1998

In 1992, Leto moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in directing, with the intention of playing on the side. He found small roles on TV shows, but his first break came in 1994, after being cast in front of Claire Danes as Jordan Catalan, her love interest in the short-lived yet well-reviewed ABC teen drama My So-Called Life. The show was praised for its depiction of adolescence and developed a strong cult following, despite being canceled after just one season. In the same year, he made his television film debut starring alongside Alicia Silverstone in Cool and the Nuts and made his first film appearance in the 1995 drama How to Make an American Quilt. He later co-starred with Christina Ricci in The Last of the High Kings (1996) and played a supporting role in Switchback (1997).

In 1997, Leto appeared in the biopic Prefontaine, in which he played the part of the optimistic Steve Prefontaine Olympics. In order to prepare for the role, Leto immersed himself in the life of the runner, trained for six weeks, and met with his family and friends. He had a striking resemblance to the real Prefontaine, also adopting the athlete's voice and upright running style. His portrayal has received positive reviews from critics and is often seen as a breakthrough role. Peter Stack of the San Francisco Chronicle noted how Leto played an athlete with raw vitality; “With hypnotic blue eyes and dirty blond hair, Leto captures the rock-star image of the Prefontaine affected, and looks natural in the fiery performances on the stage, as well as off, where Pre affected the brash, confrontational image.”

Jared Leto's 1998–2002 Appearance

In 1998 Leto formed the rock band “Thirty Seconds to Mars” in Los Angeles, California, with his brother Shannon. When the band first began, Jared Leto did not allow his role as a Hollywood actor to be used to promote the band. Their debut album has been in the works for a few years, with Leto composing most of the tracks. Their work led to a number of record labels interested in signing Thirty Seconds to Mars, which eventually signed with Immortal Records.

Leto appeared in the professional movie Highway. Set in 1994, Leto is captured with his employer's wife, a Vegas gangster, and flies to Seattle with his best friend Jake Gyllenhaal in the week preceding Kurt Cobain's suicide. Filming concluded in early 2000, but the film was not released until March 2002 on home video formats, although it was originally planned for theatre release.

Jared Leto's 2002–2005 Appearance

Leto returned to the thriller Panic Room in 2002, which marked his second collaboration with director David Fincher. He played the supporting role of Junior, a burglar who terrorizes the character of Jodie Foster, Meg Altman. The film was well-received by critics and became a financial success, accounting for nearly US$ 200 million worldwide. Leto and Cameron Diaz ended their four-year relationship in 2003. Leto's next film was the biographical film Alexander, directed by Oliver Stone in 2004. He played Hephaest, Alexander the Great's closest friend. The film struggled in the United States; Stone attributed its poor reception to criticism of the portrayal of Alexander's bisexuality, but succeeded globally, with worldwide sales of $167 million.

It took two years to record Thirty Seconds to Mars' second studio album, A Beautiful Lie, with the band moving to four continents to suit Leto's acting career. A Beautiful Lie was released in the United States on 30 August 2005. Since then, it has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and has gained platinum and gold status in a number of countries, with sales totaling more than four million. The band toured extensively in support of the album and performed at many major festivals, including Roskilde, Pinkpop, Rock is Ring and Download.

Jared Leto's 2006–2008 Appearance

In 2006, Leto starred in the neo-noir crime drama Lonely Hearts, the true story of the famous 'Lonely Hearts Murderers' of the 1940s, Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck. Playing Fernandez, he co-starred with Salma Hayek, who played Beck's part. The film received mixed reviews from critics; however, Leto's performance was widely praised; Reelz's Heather Huntington wrote that his “layered performance as a neatly dressed dandy with no remorse is truly amazing.

Jared Leto's 2008–2011 Appearance

Leto created “Closer to the Edge” (2010), a short film featuring tour clips, fan commentaries, and photographs of Thirty Seconds to Mars from their childhood, during the Into the Wild Tour party. Critics praised the simplicity of the video; James Montgomery of MTV wrote, “There is no questioning the power to see tens of thousands of fans seeking a shared redemption, a crowd of people being one. It's what rock and roll are supposed to be, really: inclusion.” In December 2011, Thirty Seconds to Mars entered Guinness World Records for most live shows during a single al.

Leto's next project was “Hurricane” (2010), an ambitious short film that examines personal fears and reveals hidden visions in what is assumed to be a dream. Leto filmed it in New York City, describing its premise as a “surrealistic dream-fantasy nightmare.” Upon release, “Hurricane” gained attention and was initially censored due to its elements of violence. At the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, the short film won three nominations for Best Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing.

Jared Leto's 2012–2013 Appearance

In 2012, Leto made his film debut with the documentary Product. It chronicles the contemporary music industry as it portrays the legal conflict between Thirty Seconds to Mars and the record label EMI after the band attempted to withdraw from the copyright conflict. The artifact was made available on a small budget by Leto and personal assistant Emma Ludbrook through the production company Sisyphus Corporation. It was premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the People's Choice Award for Best Documentary. Critics appreciated the study of the state of the contemporary music industry and its emphasis on the relationship between musicians and record labels. The film received a limited theatre release starting on 23 November 2013, before being digitally released on 3 December 2013.

After a 5 years hiatus from filming, Leto returned to act in the drama Dallas Buyers Club (2013), directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and co-starring Matthew McConaughey. Leto portrayed Rayon, a drug-addicted transgender woman with AIDS, a friend of McConaughey's character, Ron Woodroof. In order to accurately portray his role, Leto lost 30 pounds, shaved his eyebrows, and waxed his entire body. During the shooting, Leto refused to break the character. The Dallas Buyers Club received universal critical acclaim and became a commercial success, resulting in a variety of accolades for Leto, who was awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture, the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by the Male Actor in Supporting Role, and a variety of film critics' circle awards for role-playing.

Jared Leto's Upcoming Projects

In September 2016, it was revealed that Leto will play Andy Warhol in a biopic written by Terence Winter and produced by Michael De Luca. Leto later confirmed his role as Warhol on his Instagram in August 2020. In February 2017, it was reported that Leto would direct the thriller 77 for Paramount Pictures. Following the release of Suicide Squad, Leto expressed interest in reprising his role as the Joker in future DC Extended Universe installments. In August 2017, it was announced that Leto would reprise his role in several films in the shared universe, including Gotham City Sirens, and an as-yet-untitled film based on the Joker and Harley Quinn. In June 2018, Variety reported that a film based around the Joker is in production. Leto will act as an executive producer in addition to reprising his role as the Joker, with the studio's intent that the film would “pave the way” for all other Suicide Squad-related projects. Leto will also be concerned with recruiting the film's production crew.

Jared Leto's Business Work

After a strong relationship between Thirty Seconds to Mars and its audience, Leto launched The Hive, social media management, and digital marketing company. It is based in Studio City, Los Angeles, and focuses on creative community building. In recent years, it has grown to include other artists such as Jessie J and Semi-Precious Guns. In 2010, Leto launched The One and Only Golden Tickets, a full-service company that operates worldwide and manages exclusive services for concerts, festivals, and events. The company was renamed Adventures In Wonderland in 2013. In 2011, Leto introduced the VyRT online platform. Created as a live video streaming service, it also includes social networking and official merchandise. His idea came from a couple of frustrating Leto's experiences with Thirty Seconds to Mars streaming their own live events. In June 2012, VyRT won the Best Online Concert Experience award at the O Music Awards. In 2012, Leto became an investor in Surf Air, an air service based in California. He's also a funder for Reddit and Robinhood Markets.
